Who am I talking about you ask?
Wait for it…the sugar fairy of course. She is the most wonderful visitor. Last year (and every year to come, I hope) she visited our doorstep hoping to find a bucket full of sweets. (Apparently she has an excellent dental plan). In exchange she leaves the one toy my kids have had on the top of their wish list since last Christmas or their last birthday ( I think she’s got an “in” with Santa).
You can just imagine the fun. Now the kids not only enjoy thinking through and preparing their Halloween costumes and visiting the neighbours yelling trick or treat, they also have a special surprise to look forward to the day after Halloween.
We’ve combined the sugar fairy tradition with a few other traditions (a.k.a. guidelines) around Halloween. I adopted these guidelines from some wise and trusted moms in the neighbourhood who have perhaps experienced a Halloween or two more than I. Some of them use a combination of these guidelines to navigate the Halloween frenzy.
1)The kids can go hog-wild on Halloween night. Bedtime is a write-off anyway. And the feeling in their stomach might even help them understand why we don’t normally let them eat til they drop. (They actually show surprising restraint!)
2)Nothing is eaten until Mom or Dad has had the chance to investigate items with questionable packaging or anything posing a choking hazard.
3)The kids can pick a dozen of their most favourite treats to be put in their lunch bags in November or to enjoy on “movie night.”
What does the sugar fairy do with her spoils?
1)”She” uses the chocolate bars in Christmas baking. (just search the net for “recipes using chocolate bars”)
2)”She” uses the gummy bears etc for decorating our gingerbread house
3)”She” fills the piñata with them in anticipation of several November and December birthdays
4)”She” sends them to office with the “sugar elf” otherwise known as Daddy to share with the other sugar elves and fairies.
With birthdays, holiday parties and Christmas on the heals of Halloween the next person I’m hoping arrives at my door is is mummy's will-power fairy. I'll trade the sweats for a day at the spa?
Happy Trick or Treat.
